Ingredients

  • 4 cube steaks
  • 1 packet dry onion soup mix 1 oz
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup 10.5 oz
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt optional, as soup mix is salty
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch optional, for thickening

Method

  1. Prep the Crock Pot: Spray the crock pot with non-stick spray or lightly grease it.
  2. Layer Ingredients: Place the sliced onions at the bottom of the crock pot. Lay the cube steaks on top.
  3. Mix the Sauce: In a bowl, mix cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, dry onion soup mix, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Pour over the steaks.
  4. Cook: Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 4 hours until the steak is fork-tender.
  5. Optional Thickening: If you want a thicker gravy, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water. Stir into the sauce in the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  6. Serve: Enjoy over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Notes

  • Tenderizing the Meat: Cube steak is already mechanically tenderized, but if you want extra tenderness, you can pound it lightly with a meat mallet before cooking.
  • Avoid Overcooking: While slow cooking helps break down tough meat fibers, overcooking beyond 8 hours on low can cause the meat to fall apart too much.
  • For a Thicker Gravy: Mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water and stir it in during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  • Mushroom Lovers: Add fresh mushrooms for extra flavor.
  • Extra Seasoning: Add smoked paprika, thyme, or a dash of soy sauce for deeper umami.
  • Creamy Alternative: Swap cream of mushroom soup with cream of celery or a homemade white sauce for a different taste.
