Ingredients
Method
- Prep the Crock Pot: Spray the crock pot with non-stick spray or lightly grease it.
- Layer Ingredients: Place the sliced onions at the bottom of the crock pot. Lay the cube steaks on top.
- Mix the Sauce: In a bowl, mix cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, dry onion soup mix, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Pour over the steaks.
- Cook: Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 4 hours until the steak is fork-tender.
- Optional Thickening: If you want a thicker gravy, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water. Stir into the sauce in the last 30 minutes of cooking.
- Serve: Enjoy over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
Notes
- Tenderizing the Meat: Cube steak is already mechanically tenderized, but if you want extra tenderness, you can pound it lightly with a meat mallet before cooking.
- Avoid Overcooking: While slow cooking helps break down tough meat fibers, overcooking beyond 8 hours on low can cause the meat to fall apart too much.
- For a Thicker Gravy: Mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water and stir it in during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
- Mushroom Lovers: Add fresh mushrooms for extra flavor.
- Extra Seasoning: Add smoked paprika, thyme, or a dash of soy sauce for deeper umami.
- Creamy Alternative: Swap cream of mushroom soup with cream of celery or a homemade white sauce for a different taste.
